Nature Education Series: The Sex Lives of Plants Saturday, June 14, 2025

Saturday, June 14 - Join us for a look into the little known yet truly fascinating world of plant reproduction.  From mosses to ferns to pine trees, we’ll learn some of the complex ways these plants create the next generation.  A more in-depth look at the extremely diverse group of flowering plants will reveal some remarkable and  unbelievable ways some species use mimicry, trickery, and seduction just to attract pollinators and get their pollen transported to other flowers.  You’ll never look at plants the same again!

Nature Education Series: Birding 101 Sunday, June 8, 2025

Sunday, June 8 - If you’ve ever wondered what that bright yellow bird is, who's singing that beautiful song, or what made those rows of little holes in a tree, then join us for an introductory presentation about birds and bird identification.  We’ll cover a variety of ways to observe birds, including physical characteristics, behaviors and their habitats.  We’ll also share some of the best birding apps to help you identify birds wherever you go.  After a one-hour presentation, you’ll get to try out your new skills by birding at some of Volcan Mountain Foundation’s most beau

Bird Count - Wednesday, May 28, 2025

May 28: Join the Volcan Mountain Foundation for its quarterly bird count on Volcan Mountain in Julian. This is a great opportunity to hone your bird ID skills with experts, learn about our local mountain bird species, and contribute valuable data to VMF and the Cornell Lab of Orinthology. We'll be focusing our attention on the areas near our Watershed and Sky Island trails as well as VMF's recently acquired pond. There is a combined two miles of walking during this survey. Hiking is easy to moderate.

Date: Wednesday, May 28

Wildcrafting: Spa Day - Sunday, May 25, 2025

Sunday, May 25: Join VMF's Outdoor Naturalist Janice Smith as we start our day relaxing quietly in a sensory meditation, allowing us to slow down, breathe deeply, and connect with the beauty of nature. Inspired by the freshness of the season, we’ll take a short walk to forage the ingredients we will use to make botanical bath salts, a raw sugar scrub, and a handmade spring soap infused with essential oils of your choice. You will be able to take home your handcrafted creations.
